Pacific Student Emergency Fund update

April 14, 2020

Many students have lost their jobs and are struggling to purchase basic necessities like food for themselves and their families, medication and school supplies or access the technology needed to complete their remote coursework. Housing and rent payments have also become a hardship for some students.

During this time, Pacific's care manager referrals have increased by 50 percent. Through this fund, the university is able to offer immediate relief by providing gift cards to students so they can purchase groceries and supplies. **To date, 54 students have received gift cards with more requests coming in daily.**

Here are a few examples of students who have benefited from this fund:

  • A non-traditional student who worked three jobs to care for herself and her parents. This student was laid off from those jobs and was experiencing food insecurity.
  • A first generation, non-traditional student who is a single parent of 2 children was laid off from work and had no food for her children.
  • A first generation student who is a single parent of 4 children was able to borrow a university laptop to stay enrolled and learn remotely. She and her family were also experiencing food insecurity.

Here is a quote from Rhonda Bryant, Associate Vice President and Dean of Students:

"Our students have multiple responsibilities between juggling academics, caring for themselves and their families and managing the financial stresses caused by this pandemic. We remain committed to maintaining high levels of support and assistance, and the student emergency relief fund gives us the flexibility to respond to students with the most urgent needs in real-time. We are so grateful to donors and the Pacific community as we work together to support our students during this stressful time."
