Formula SAE Competition Vehicle

Pacific's 2022-2023 Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Team is made up of 25 dedicated students with backgrounds from engineering to business. The Formula SAE competition challenges students to apply engineering and business fundamentals to conceive, fabricate, and compete with formula-style race cars against other universities.

Student teams are judged not only in the performance of their vehicles, quality of their engineering design work, and practicality of their business model.

2022-23 PACIFIC FORMULA SAE TEAM VISION

The goal of this project is to design, manufacture, and validate a competitive race car. This year, we aim to design a chassis, suspension system, cockpit body, aerodynamic features, and drivetrain up to SAE competition standards before experimenting with newer technologies such as sensors to aid in collecting data. We are especially focused on tuning the weaknesses of last year's model. Two major milestones we aim to achieve are:

  1. Reduce overall vehicle weight from 849 lbs to 500 lbs, while not compromising overall efficacy and reliability.
  2. Improve our design score by better implementing engineering design processes geared towards optimization of FSAE vehicles.
This should give us plenty of documentation to refer back to as we begin to analyze what factors improve performance. Having this rationale on hand will benefit us as we present to the judges as well as give future FSAE members data to build on.

We have selected to purchase a 2007 Yamaha YZF R6 motorcycle engine to power our car, small lightweight rims, slick tires, and a standalone ECU to tune the heavily modified engine. We have secured the necessary tubing for chassis construction, as well as the carbon fiber needed for body work, but a majority of the materials and components we are still in need of funding for.

This year we have redesigned the entire race car to be better optimized for the dynamic and static competition events. We are looking for support to bring our design into fruition from alumni, friends and family. Thank you for considering a gift to help us achieve our goals!

The official dates for the competition are May 17th - 20th, 2023 in Brooklyn, Michigan. For more information on the event, visit https://www.sae.org/attend/student-events/formula-sae-michigan
