Alex Fischl Memorial Scholarship

In July of last year, Alexandra Fischl, McGeorge Class of 2013, lost her battle with cancer and passed away at the age of 33. Alex was a graduate of UC Santa Cruz where she majored in political science and, in her junior year, worked as an extern at the Democratic National Committee. While a student at McGeorge, she participated in the Parole Advocacy Program where she represented parolees being charged with parole violations. She was also a law clerk/mediator at the McGeorge Housing Mediation Clinic where she continued to work for a time following graduation. Beginning in 2015, Alex became a union representative at SEIU Local 1000 where she was later promoted to Senior Union Representative and was slated to become a Manager of the Oakland Regional Office of the union.

Throughout her short life, Alex was a champion of the underdog and devoted to the promotion of social and criminal justice. Consistent with this, prior to her passing, Alex requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations in her honor be made to the Innocence Project, an organization devoted to freeing the wrongly accused.

To continue her legacy and keep her memory alive, two of Alex’s close friends and law school classmates have been working with the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law to create the Alexandra Fischl Social and Criminal Justice Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to law students who demonstrate a commitment to the pursuit of a legal career devoted to the promotion of social and/or criminal justice, with a preference for students with financial needs.

In order to make this endowed scholarship a reality, $50,000 must be raised to create the endowment and take advantage of the Powell Match funds before they run out. When we meet the $50,000 fundraising goal, the University will match it dollar for dollar, creating an endowment of $100,000. This would endow the scholarship in perpetuity. To date we have raised approximately $40,000 for the scholarship.

Your contribution can help us to reach the $50,000 goal and make the Alexandra Fischl Social and Criminal Justice Scholarship a reality.
